Anime
Anime is a style of 2d animation form Japan that has became increasingly popular in western society over the last 20 years.
Anime has distinctive drawing techniques that is used to draw people, ridiculously big eyes and big, bright (and possibly oddly coloured) hair.

Anime like 2D animation has many forms and styles that come under the initial genre, the two main styles are Shoujo (girly and cutesy drawings) and Shounen (strong, masculine style at appeals to boys).

Here is a video of mixed anime shows, that shows the different types and styles of anime shows out there. I am aware that there is a real person in the movie, this is how the person wanted to make it.
Stop/ Clay
The style Stop-animation has many variations of sub-styles within category, I will only be looking at the two most polplar types, the main style Stop-animation and Clay-animation.
Stop-animation and Clay-animation both have the same method of making the characters move, with similarities in presentation and the finished work. This is a long and time consuming method, taking one shot, stopping camera, moving the figure ever so slightly and doing the whole process again a. The way movement is made in both processes is by taking hundreds upon thousands of individual shots of the figure, then making all the individual shots in to one piece of film.
With both Clay and Stop using the same process to make movement, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two. There is one major difference to tell them apart by what 'materials' are used to crate the characters to begin with.
Just as it's name suggests the figures that are created in the Clay Animation style are made entirely out of modeling clay or plasticine, that is the only notable difference. Stop Animation, uses the same stop and go camera techniques to make the figure move as Stop-animation.
The two best examples of clay animation that people would recognize are Wallace and Gromit and the little green blog we all love Gumby.

Stop animation covers aboard range of materials/items that can be manipulated to move on the screen, such items can be form a simple coin to a action figure/doll. The one of the most current shows that use this method is the Robot Chicken team. I must tell you that a lot of their skits can be offensive or the joke can taken the wrong way, here a two skits that are not so bad, but they do contain swearing and violence.

3D Animation
3D animation is when a image has made to look to be three dimensional and solid, unlike 2D animation that has a flat, two dimensional finish.
The most influential 3D animation company is Disney Pixar. Disney Pixar is now one of the biggest 3D animation companies in the world since their break through movie Toy Story in 1995. The company Dreamworks came along in 2001with their hit movie Sherk, giving Pixar a rival in this booming industry .
The easiest way to make a 3D figure move is to make a skeleton image that is controlled and manipulate by the animator on the computer using specially designed animation programs. Then the skeleton has the design of the figure drawn over the top.
Or another way to do it is make the figure out of modeling clay and using a special laser connected to the computer that scans the surface area one line at a time. The animator will scan every single line of the clay on to the computer.

2D animation would have to be the most recognized animation type in the world. This is popular for animators due to it being a "quick" process. Before the sudden boom of 3D animation, was the most used style with nearly everything; entertainment (movies and t.v series) to advertisements all kinds (The Bart Simpson Butterfinger adds to Ninja Turtle drug warning commercial).

It was in the 80s and 90s when the 2D animation influx really began, due to the increased use of computer. Before computers were introduced, before then all the animators would draw everything by hand.

The example of this would have to be how Disney became an instant success. In the late 80's to late 90's, Disney and Disney Pixar animation boomed. With such movies as "Beauty and the Beast" "Little Mermaid" "Toy Story" and "The Lion King", Disney has become the a billion dollar company.

What the blog is about
This blog is a brief guide to the most recognized types of animation that has developed over the years.
I chose this subject because I have always enjoyed the animated Disney movies as a child (and I not going to stop anytime soon), and recently I have been exploring other movies/shows that classed themselves as a animated feature. I was surprised at all the different styles and subcategories
Here in the blog we will be looking at four/five different types available that are considered the most recognized: 2D, 3D, Stop/Clay and Anime
These styles are popular due to the big explosion in visual media/ pop culture in the last twenty years; Simpsons, Wallace and Gromit, Disney/ Pixar, Poke'mon and Shrek are the best examples due to their immense popularity among a range of different age groups.
The RSS blog I found Cartoon Brew, is written by two animation historians. It has some really good information about the animation categories, as well as the companies and people that work in the industry and what is coming out. If the reader was interested in some other good sites about animation, there is a list of recommend sites and blogs down the side of the blog.
